“Palette” CleanserWinter Feature: Pomegranate

If you are a regular reader of our “Palette” Cleanser feature you already know we have a great deal of fun exploring a beautiful and seasonally relevant ingredient that is also known for its powerful color. Humans connect with color in a very visceral way. Our moods, pulse rates, blood flow, anxiety levels are all affected by color. Throughout history we have drawn from the infinite palette afforded us by nature to create art, textiles, design, and fashion. Of course, nature also provides us with a glorious abundance of foods in limitless colors, sparking the healthful eating mantra: “Eat the Rainbow.”
We have moved into the time of year where daylight hours are shorter and the growing season is over. This winter we are turning our attention to the pomegranate. It is deeply embedded in human history and has provided food and medicine across different cultures and civilizations for thousands of years. It is also central to the mythological story of Persephone being taken by Hades to the underworld (where she ate six or seven pomegranate seeds). Her mother, Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was so consumed with grief over Persephone’s disappearance, she refused to let new crops grow until her daughter was returned. Even after daughter and mother were reunited, since Persephone had eaten the pomegranate seeds in the underworld, she was destined to return to Hades for half the year, thus provoking the return of winter each year.
Mythology aside, the pomegranate is a symbol of beauty, love, marriage, fertility, birth, rebirth, hope, prosperity, and eternity. It can be found embroidered into the hem of a high priest’s robes, carved into the capitals of temple pillars, being held by Buddha in ancient artwork, and adorning Illuminated Pages. It is also the original superfood! The delectable nectar is full of vitamins A, B, and C, phosphorous, potassium, and iron. Pomegranates have been proven to contain more antioxidants than red wine or green tea. They are also used in skin care and anti-aging products. The ancients knew a thing or two, citing pomegranates to be good for digestion, anti-inflammation, heart health, and general immune system boosting. According to this ancient Egyptian proverb: “Eat a pomegranate and visit a bath; your youth will haste back.”
And, of course, the gorgeous ruby-like jewels are a joy to behold. Pomegranate – the color! It’s intense! It’s bold! The color of passion and life! It is the color of a heart that beats just a little faster. A welcome burst of saturated garnet grandeur during a time of year where grey and gloom can certainly take over the visual landscape. It’s fiery and festive! It’s rich and luxurious! Pomegranate is unabashedly stunning. It will be noticed. It will pull focus. It’s a color that cannot be denied. A crimson crescendo! Whether a cape lining or book cover, leather valise or lipstick, pocket square or accent wall, pomegranate makes a memorable statement!
